I took off the starter because it seemed like it wouldn't catch. Sure enough the drive ends are worn off. The guy at the Repair Shop says I need to clean up some of the teeth where the starter connects, with a file. Does this make any sense?
I think he called it a ring gear. Or he said the starter drive will wear out again quick. Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas

the ring gear is the toothed ring on the outside of the flywheel. if the teeth are damaged it will wear out the gear on the end of the starter. you can try to file the teeth back into shape. or if you feel bored you can pull the flywheel off. a lot of these ring gear can be removed and turned over, giving you a fresh side to wear on. not exactly the proper way to repair it but when you work for the people i do they just want it fixed cheap as possible lol

No you have to pull either the engine or tranny.

pull the engine or tranny. pull off flywheel. heat ring gear with torch all the way around until light taping with a small hammer will knock it off. flip ring gear over and reinstall on flywheel by heating unitl it falls in place. let it cool off and reinstall.

upon closer inspection, the teeth look okay, but a grove is cut into the ring just at the right base of each tooth. this looks to be done by the broken drive on the starter. My guess? I'm hoping the new drive will engage correctly.

Brad,
Often the engine stops in the same one (or more) particular place(s), so the initial engagement of the starter motor is on the same few ring teeth every time. These teeth may be much more worn, or need more cleaning up, than the rest.

Stops in one place in reply to RAB, 12-21-2004 23:38:43
Your right. The previous owner said it always stopped in the same place. The little peg on the crank shaft would alway be straight up. He'd have someone turn it to 10 o'clock or 8 o'clock an it would sometimes catch. I'm going to take a look today at each tooth and see if I can notice any differences. Thanks and Merry Christmas
