Hey guys, any ideas where I can find a used starter pinion for a pony motor out of a D8 CAT with a 14A prefix. I've called Iron Peddlers and several other places and they are looking for me but I figured you guys might know some others I haven't tried. I know I can get one new through CAT but they want nearly $600 for that little 12 tooth gear. The old pony never fails to start first round and runs like a dream with a newly rebuilt mag and carb, so I hate to give my customer a heart attack by telling him how much more it's gonna cost to get everything working right now that I got it running. I know alot of these things have been changed over to electric so there ought to be alot of them laying around out there somewhere if I can just find one of them. I also need the governor link to the carb if anybody has one. I can fab one but it'd be so much easier to have the right part. Thanks for any leads you guys can turn me onto. Wayne

Hey guys, thanks for the links and info.... P&D, I've seen your postings but have never clicked on the link til now. I'll keep ya'll in mind next time I'm looking for something. As for the pinion there were only two teeth broken partially broken off where they had tried to engage it while it was turning. Since I didn't have any luck the other day finding one I had a friend of ours TIG up the parts of the teeth that were gone. Since I still had 75% of the two teeth left, unbroken, I had a nice profile left so it wasn't all that hard to grind the repaired areas back to the origional profile. Since I'm also fixing the cone brake in it as I go back together with it, it ought to work just fine for a good while. Plus I've only got $35 in it for the weld repair and about 30 minutes of my time for the grinding. That works out to less than $100 for the repair vs nearly $600 new or even a normal "fair" price for a used one. Thanks again guys.

Do you have a part # for that gear? I may be able to locate one here. I have 2 D8 engines here but not sure if the starter pinions are there still, I'll have to check. If you do have the part #, shoot me an e-mail directly with it. Then I can be sure we have the right part.
