I have a JD350 with a winch.

It has a PTO and I am trying to get the winch to work. I engage the PTO by pulling the lever to the right. Then use the hydraulic lever but the winch does not respond. Is there something else I need to do.

Phil

First of all, you need to know what winch you have. Some of the older winches used on Deere's were "manual" winches which used a large master cylinder to activate the winch. Normally found on 1010s or early 350s. The later, "power winches" have thier own separate and self-contained hydraulic systems. With any of them, you have to make sure the PTO shaft is turning. But, once that is ascertained, diagnosis differs. The later "power winches" have their own hydraulic pumps, filter, etc. With the "power winches", the first ones used a spool valve for winch control which was fairly trouble free. Then, Deere changed over to a rotary hydraulic valve which was absolutely awful - trouble prone and very expensive. At some point in time, ca. mid-80s, Deere gave up on the rotary control valve and offered kits to change over to a spool valve.

I am running into the same problem, I recently purchased a 350C crawler loader. It has a winch but the owners manual states it is controled by the far right lever. After a little investigating I have found out the lever mentioned is not hooked up for the winch. Instead it is to a hudrolic cylander used for a clam-shell bucket. Additionally I can see a clevis under the seat that is conected to a control center on the winch. Question: How do I get this thing hooked up and working. I was told the winch was completely re-worked prior to my purchas. How much of this is true goes without saying put I do see new bolts and a new winch filter. It has an idintification plate on it model # John Deere 3315 manufactured in Iowa.

Be sure the reverser lever is in "forward" position, the transmission is in neutral and the "clutch" pedal is released.

If your machine does not have a reverser then make sure the transmission is in neutral and clutch pedal is released.

This makes sure the pto shaft is turning otherwise neither type of winch will work.
