I have a 1955 D4-7U with oil contamination on the brake shoes and drum, which severely limits my steering. I have no access in the rear of the dozer due to a atlas winch. I do have access below the seat panel. Is their any solvent that could be poured in or sprayed on that would rid this problem. A cat dealer wants 3500.00 to solve this problem.

The Cat maintenance manuals suggest pouring a "nonflamible solvent" in the clutch cases and running the tractor forwards and backwards, lightly applying and releaseing the brakes to flush the oil out. I used MEK in my D4 6U. It took 3 gallons in eaach case to bring the solvent level to where the clutch pack was just awash and the lower part of the brake band was under the solvent level. After the oil is flushed out of the linings, then just drain the solvent out by way of the case drains. Remember to put the drain plugs back.
