Converting from generator to alt on 530ck diesel

I'm in the middle of an engine rebuild on the diesel and while everything is out I'm going to service the parts. What I'm wondering if it would be difficult to swap the generator for an alternator? If so, what make/model did you use? It would be nice if a GM alternator could be made to fit as they are cheap and reliable. I realize I'd have to switch from positive to negative ground and am assuming the hour meter will no longer work. Any other pitfalls to look out for?

Thanks,

Brad

I've got a 450 crawler with the 188 Diesel. I converted over to a standard 3 wire GM alternator and made the bracket you see here.

john if you look at your picture in the front overhang of your bracket i took a 1"x1/4" x 6" long bracket heated and twisted it was able to catch lower hole and welded it to the top of that bracket.takes the stress off the 2 bolts.john whats your serial # trying to see what year my machine is.

Hi,just wanted to say watch out for the one wire type GM alt, some of them have to be reved to 2000-2500 rpm before they will put out a good 14.5 volt, they should charge around 12v all the time though.I would go with the standard GM 3 wire hookup. If your hour meter is 12v posi ground then you might just be able to swap the wires on it.I have read a few posts where people have to make a new bracket to mount the alt.Just my 2 cents.

Yep, thats what I"m looking for. Only thing I have to watch out for is the frame of the front end loader. It passes fairly close to the generator. If the GM alternator is to large I"ll check into the smaller ones. We use one from a Geo Metro on my wifes race car that is real small and puts out 50 amps. That might be the route I"d have to go.

Thanks for the info.

Brad
