Hey guys, in a post the other day "bjg/ark" made a comment about not many guys not running equipment the vintage of his D6C which was made from like '63 -'67. That got me to wondering, who has the oldest operating machine out there that's being used on daily or even weekly basis? I'm talking heavy/construction equipment like dozers, excavators, cranes, etc, not farm tractors.... The oldest machine I know of that's soon to be in almost daily use is a 212 CAT grader from the early 50s. The guy also has an 80D Northwest front shovel from the mid '60s that he uses as his main machine digging and loading concord gravel. I'm also working on a guys cable controlled D8 which is about a '57 vintage machine that he hopes to use regularly around the farm..... I know alot of guys restore these old machines and "play" with them, but how many of you actually work them like they were designed to do and who has the oldest one still working??

I have a 1947 or 1948 8n Ford that I use reguaraly and a 1931 AC 35 crawler that I use to get the Ford out of the mud when it gets stuck. The AC 35 does not have any hydralics on it but I have an old Misken (1940"s) pull scraper I intend to pull with it.

I have a 1948 Cat 12 Grader 8T4349 I do not use it every day but a few times a year. It starts and runs great and looks good. It was bought new by the city of Seward,Alaska in 48 for $13,000.00 or so FOB Seward, Ak. I bought it at Auction in 1977. Yes it has busted my knuckles a few times.

I have a 1960 Allis Chalmers Model D grader that I hope to put into fairly steady use maintaining driveways as soon as I shed my engineering practice. Hopefully by summer. It will be a little retirement income and a hobby. I even had a chance to plow a little snow with it last weekend. Our winter percipitation is usually rain.

My neighbors owned a large constructioncompany from the 50's to the ealy eighties and haveseveral acres of machines. Lastyear THey made a showing with their early AC260 scraper a mid fifties D6 Unit dragline and a few other machines they use to log with and build house lots. My older brother owned a small earth moving business and when it came time to buy a grader the neighbor has a DD Allis Chalmers grader they used on their driving range. Hebought itandwe drove it home with me holding a gas can with a hose running to the carb. When we got it home we fixed the fuel tank tightened some busings built a new seat and other thins that weekend and painted it. Its fisrt months earnings were around 22 000 dollars on several building pads. It was perfectfor alot of the smallerjobs we did to. Theres also an outfit In Muscle Shoals Alabama that uses several old Cable pans from Bucyrus and Letourneau behind old D8/s with Larger D9 under carriages on them to make them faster for pan pulling.

Not the oldest, but the guy I bought my 1964 Case 310E has another one that he uses for developing a subdivision, roads, clearing, etc. Like others stated, in "season" a tank or two a week.

I have a 1932 T 20 McCormick Deering TracTracTor
that I use about once a week. I installed an electric starter using a Honda CRX starter and
a Toyota Tercell flexplate. I also installed a
blade using 2"x4" thickwall tubing for the blade
frame, and a Ford Dearborn actual blade. I am
really happy with the results, it"s a lot fun to operate.

Wayne, a bit of a different angle, one of the more well-off individuals I know is a fellow who has older equipment,to give you an idea, his grader,a JD450 track loader,Freightliner graveltruck and Mack water truck are all over 20-25 or more yrs old.Operates all himself so the driver abuse factor is almost nil, does most of his own repairs and doesn"t owe a nickel. He just shakes his head when he see"s a young guy buying a new logging truck or other new equipment and then is behind the 8 ball making monster payments.I agree nothing wrong with older stuff. I've got 2 420C JDs. The one I bought new in '59 is apart for tranny work. The other one I bought a couple years ago I've been using ever since digging brush and using the winch to pull that and small trees to the pile for burning. The winch was made from a '28--'32 Ford car rearend. It has a telescoping boom I made on it so I can load stumps and logs. This past week I used the boom and winch to lift a hook on a 20' pole to tear out a dam that was causing my hayfield to flood. I'm pretty sure the "engineers" have left the area, at least for now.

I restored my 1927 Cat 30 last year and it joins my Cat 35 which was made in 1931. I use them to welcome in the new year by decorating them up with Christmas lites.

I have a 1969 International 150 tracked loader. I use it every week, and have used it extensively in the last year to build an 800 foot driveway, which includes excavating deep into hillsides, gravel pits, grading, culvert installation, lot clearing/grubbing and logging. I definitely work this machine hard and do so often. No regrets either, it's been a great machine.
