Just purchased a CAT excavator with Cat engine.
Wondering what I should do to the engine to make sure its operating correctly. What should I look for any recommendation on what to tune up? Engine has 5800 hours on it. It is a 3114T.
Any comments would be greatly appreciate.

We have bought several used cat pieces and know the shop guys pretty well. In fact one is a second cousin. With that being said Bob is correct that the top end if checked needs to be done by cat with special tools. The advice given to us on used was if you want those engines to live up to their reputation get the top ends done. We get valves and injectors set every 2-3000 hours. I think each one cost us $600. Good Luck. Kevin

I would just make sure the oil and filter was changed then put it to work Bob. The only thing you can do is adjust the valves, you need an expensive tool group to set the injectors and timing. (like a Detroit but tools are more fancy) Unless it sounds like the valves are noisey I would leave them alone too.
