Where can I get a head and oil gasket for the AC HD5?

What are the torque specs on the head bolts?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Walt

Thanks to all.

Had a coolant link in the radiator, engine overheated and shut down. After it cooled, I filled it with coolant and noticed it was leaking. Figured I would take care of it later and began putting water in it and using the drain cock at the end of the day. Last time I used it, it had water in the cylinders. I assume the head gasket blew, could the block or head have cracked???

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Walt

an auto machine shop will check the head but again if your your block is worped youll never hold a head gasket.

I just overhauled the 2-71 in my HD5G over the holidays. Most of the parts including the gaskets I purchased from local Napa store. Gaskets were Victor, bearings were Clevite77, piston/sleeves/rings were Perfect Circle. Detroit Diesel has all the parts too. 180 to 190 foot pounds should do it for the cylinder head bolts. Start at center blower side bolt(1) Then across and center to (2) Then across and back to (3) Then across to (4) Then across and front to (5) Then across to (6). I torqued to 190 in 4 stages for a good even drawdown.

Body of Message:

i had a hd-5 loader.listen to me closely.the 2-71 is noted to warp the block where the head sits.if you dont block plane it youll never keep a head gasket.get an engine builder to straight edge the block to check it.its a small engine so dont get excited.4 hours you can pull out the engine and clutch assy.a tow truck or a backhoe will lift it.big toys got to learn how to fix it.if i see a manual on ebay ill post it.

Is your head cracked?

2-71 heads can be found fairly easy
I have a core needs over hauled.

I believe the HD5 had a 2-53 or a 2-71 Detroit Diesel, so parts should be availale at any Detroit Diesel Allison dealer. The torque specs should be available at their shop.
