JD350: How do I remove the bull gear shaft?

The right track on my JD350 loader seizes now and then, so I'm dismantling the final drive to find the problem.

The bull gear feels loose on the shaft, so I want to pull the shaft to inspect the splines.

I inverted the castle nut on the inboard end of the shaft, and beat it unmercifully with a sledgehammer, but it didn't budge.

Do I have to press the shaft out with a bottle jack? Or is there some other trick?

The shaft is supposed to be pressed out. I would suggest removing the entire final if you have'nt already. You can repair it on the machine but this will make things much easier.
