I would like to change out the orginal 172 ford gas engine to a kubota diesel. The machine is a 1964 CanCar skidder, a small machine[1 cord max!]but i don't know what the hp would of been with the gas engine,The diesel is 34hp and free.
Decisions are hard to make but i never turn down and appreciate any info offered thanks

Hi backpacker
Just so happens I also have a 64 Can-Car, [great little machines] mine came with the 172 diesel and its been a good engine,, my opinion would be to find a Ford diesel,, a 172 or 192 industrial model, will make the swap alot easier and Im sure youd be happy with either. By the way,, Ford tactors, ie; the 861D has that engine, they are not hard to find, also the 192 was used in "mine-pumps", air compressors etc and they are out there too. Post back and let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions
Good Luck

I also have a cancar skidder with a 134 ford gas motor. It is in excellent shape and I use it daily. I would appreciate any info anyone has on these skidders. I believe they were made by Canada Car and Foundry in Thunder Bay Ontario, and later became the Treefarmer. I have no idea what years they were made but I know they replaced the horse.

It was good to get your reply, i can look around here for a ford "senator" out of a boat as a possible source, or the local tractor salvage yard might have a stock, lots of choices. Problem is the kubota has 3000hr serviced unit and was "free",thats why i am questioning the orginal hp of the gas engine.
The big picture is to rebuild "ole red" into a small porter about the same/some time.
Its been a great machine for its size/repairs etc just so much better with clean logs to cut, and no fishing of cables. I say its old age on both man and machine.
Thanks
