Last summer a neighbor was using another neighbors D8 to dig a large pond and got the thing high centered. After 2 days relearning how to operate a hand shovel he got the Cat free and moving again. Other than not getting it high centered in the first place can a cable be strung between the tracks and under the carriage to back it off ? Or is there some better method for a Cat without a winch on the rear?

Got out one day by using a log chained across the tracks. Be ready with the cutting torch to burn a link out of your chain (no no not the track chain) to release the log.

I've done the chain/cable to a tree thing many times with a TD-6, it works but you have to be very careful. If you do try it and say thee cable brakes it could take your head off and believe me it wouldn't care if it did so. But that said its one of the easyest ways to get one back out.
