Hi,

I have a mid 60"s International TD 340, that may need new steering clutches. Any suggestiong on where to get them, and where to have the machine worked on? I'm in the Los Angeles area.

Thanks.

The TD340 does not have steering "clutches". They use a planetary steering setup with steering brakes.

Assuming you"re going to have someone do the work, one possibility is a local Komatsu dealer. They bought Dresser which bought International, and they still have direct access to many parts and often have people familiar with the TD340. Probably most people who work on heavy equipment would also be able to do this. I would make sure that you do not just have an adjustment problem first. To adjust the steering, pull back each lever, and with it back, back off the locknut on the adjuster, and then adjust to give a couple of inches of freeplay in the lever.

Charlie,

The book says to do that, but I'm not sure how that works. I mean, you'd need 3 hands for starters. Also, once the locknut is loosened, the adjuster won't turn clockwise anymore, which I think means it's at it's end, right?

In order to turn the crawler without having the track slip, you have to really pull back hard on the lever.

It is easier with three hands. I tie the steering lever all the way back and then do an adjustment, and keep repeating until I get the freeplay right. But there really are two operations going on when you pull back the lever. First it releases the clutching mechanism and then it applies the pivot brake. You should probably first adjust the brake and then the steering lever freeplay. Both are in the operators manual. This may be all you need to do.
