A friend of mine will buy any cheap, off-brand piece of equipment he can find, Fiat, Liebherr, Sumitomo (sp?), Daewoo, ancient Galion and IH, usually in various stages of dis-repair then gets me to make it work again no matter what it needs (parts wise) or the cost he will get it. I may have broke him last week, his latest acquisition is a Kobelco wheel loader that actually ran and worked it needed brake work and a steering cylinder packed, he ordered what I told him, it came in Tuesday, just happened to glance at the bill, $465.00 for the packing kit and that was the correct price 'cause he did call them LOL. He just could not swallow that he had to send the kit back. People complain about Cat and JD parts prices, they can't hold these people a light.

Used to be you could repack a cylinder using a couple of standard Chevron seals or Polypaks and have it all done for less than $100. Those days are gone because nowdays just about all of the mfgs are having special shaped or sized seals made for their cylinders so you have to go back to them for parts instead if getting "off the shelf" packing like you could do in the past. I recently repacked a boom cylinder off a PC-150 Komatsu and the seal kit for it was close to $250 and that was just for the soft parts, it didn't include the wear bands. It's kind sad, no actually it's just plain redicilous when you see $2 worth of plasic laying there and you think how much it cost them to make and how extreem the mark up is..... Ford/New Holland has some that you can't even replace the wear bands on the piston, if their worn you have to replace the whole piston.....Newer equipment has it's advantages when it's still new, pretty, runs good, and is still under warranty, but after a few years the 'ole pocketbook starts seeing the strain when it breaks down.....
