Although I rebuilt my straight JD350 two years ago, I haven't had much time to use it. I've noticed that sometimes when I'm in first gear the reverser works backwards. I'll shift into second and it works the other way. Otherwise, works fine. Why does it do this?

You've got me stumped and I've rebuilt an awful lot of 350 and 1010 reversers. You sure you don't have your transmission confused with your reverser? The older 350s have a gear reverse besides a hydraulic-reverser reverse - i.e. two reverses. Deere eliminated the gear reverse sometime during the 350C series. So, with the older machines, you can have the reverser in REVERSE, and the transmission in REVERSE, and thus the machine goes forward. If you actually keep the gear transmssion in one particular gear, and then operate the crawler with the reverser control lever, and get inconsistent results - maybe it's possessed by a demon. I cannot not think of a mechanical situation where this can occur; maybe someone else can? I've seen plenty that go into forward AND reverse at the same time - which results in NO movement and a stalled engine.

Either demons or a senior moment, but I swear I put the shifter in first (forward center in the gate), put the reverser in forward (up) position and the puppy goes backwards. (Which explains the jog in the back wall of the barn.) Does just the opposite in 2nd.

linkage out of adjustment perhaps? i.e. 1st=reverse, 2nd=1st
