Can't remove clutch housing fill plug!

I have a JD 450C and I can't remove the fill plug to check the fluid level in the left side clutch housing. The 1/2 drive hole in the plug has been wallered out so that I can't get a good pull on it. I thought about trying to empty and then refill the housing through the drain plugs but that seems like a pain. I also thought about welding a large bolt to the plug but I don't know what the heat might do and what kind of mess I'd end up with if that failed to get the plug out. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Weld a nut or bolt to the plug. That is better than a torch on the plug and housing. Heat is concentrated on the plug. It will shrink and come out easily. I just finished removing the plugs from the chain case drains on my 1845 Case skid steer and earlier had to remove both drain plugs that were worn off on the finals to my 350B Deere. I can't tell you how many times I have done this over the years, never failed yet. Usually the biggest problem is getting in position to weld.

RussT, I had the same problem with the final drive drain plugs on the bottom of my Case 450B. I ground off an EZ-OUT until it fit the wallered out hole nicely and once it caught the shoulders it backed it right out. I do not have a good source for heat, so that worked for me. And my EZ-OUTS are not good for much else anyway.

Good luck,

If you have an exposed sholder on that plug you could use a hammer and chisel and tap the edge in a counter-clockwise direction to work it out.

Best of luck,

Russ, if it's a pipe thread, heat it red hot and let it cool. It will shrink and come out easy, then replace it with a new one. If not weld on a nut as you said.

Thanks John and Bob,
I've tried the chisel and I think I would cut the whole top of the plug off before it moves. Would there be a concern heating the plug with the hydraulic fluid on the inside?
Thanks again for the replies.

It will not hurt, you just need to heat the plug and it heats fast.

weld a nut on it with an arc welder, and the heat will loosen the plug, done correctly, its over fast enough that it wont hurt anything. tm
