straining hydraulics?

On my loader when it lifts a load of dirt the hydraulics make a sound like the machine is straining. It has the small bucket for the machine on it so it's not lifting over design weight.
Other loaders do not make this sound, it only happens when lifting a weight.
Any suggestions or have some experience as to what could be cause?

I wonder if enough fluid is getting to your pump and if the fluid is in good condition. If there"s a filter or screen on the section line, that may need servicing. If the fluid has too much entrained air or water, that might also reduce lubfication at the pump and cause a whirring sound. When operating under load, these effects can be magnified.

When you say it's "straining" do you mean that the engine sounds like it's lugging down or are you just hearing a strange sound from the system itself ? If the engine is lugging it could be a spool not shifting completely and putting backpressure on the system, or something along that line. If your hearing a noise can you pinpoint it? If it's in the cylinder it could be the piston seal in one of both of them leaking by. When the bucket is empty it may take say 500psi to lift it and the seal is still holding but when it's loaded and the pressure is running at say 2000psi then it's enough to blow by the seal. When this happens it can make a sound in the cylinder. In some cases, if the flow is large enough, it can also cause excessive back pressure on the return line because of the additional oil it's trying to flow in excess of what the return lines were designed to handle, not to mention the back prssure in turn causes the pressure on the supply side to rise causing more oil flow by the seal....and so on til the seal gives completely out.... Beyond that I can't think of anything off the top of my head that it might be without actually hearing what it's doing. Good luck, let us know what you find.
