Looking for a small excavator, something around 8000 lbs. Anyone know of any and also what models to stay away from.

Joe,

I asked the same question on here about 2 months ago and I ended up with a new Deere 35ZTS. Just like everything, it has its place and I'm very pleased with it. I've got two complaints; the thumb ears are a little on the weak side, they need to be reinforced with some 1/2 plate and a little welding will fix that. I wish there was more room while sitting in the seat, but it is a compact excavator - can't win I guess. Other than that it's great for tight spots and much more. Good luck, Mark

There are many good excavators out there. I'm partial to Komatsu PC 40..Good strong machine. Deere makes a 35 excavator.. also very strong
Try to stay away from " gray Iron ". These are made in foreign countries and imported to the United States and sold a lot cheaper than usual. These machines are attractive pricewise but, There are a lot of dealers that won't sell parts for these machines. When they break down, what do you do????
