I have a model 15 winch on my OC12 but the controls are missing. All there is on the winch is what looks like a tube fitting. Does anyone know anything about them? I contacted Paccar who took over Gearmatic and they can find nothing on a model 15.

Maybe you ought to look through several Gearmatic service manuals and see if some other model is similar. Gearmatic has them online for free at:

If it is like the model 9, then it uses a control unit with two master cylinders and a single lever. The model 9 has power-in only and free-wheel out with automatic brake operation. The control system uses automotive brake fluid. There is a brake drum attached to the cable drum the whole assembly rides on a powered shaft driven from the PTO. The powered shaft has a set of brake shoes mounted on it, inside the brake drum. There is also a spring loaded brake band around the outside of the brake drum. When you push the operating lever for take up fluid pressure expands the brake shoes engaging the brake drum and drum is driven by the powered shaft turning the brake shoes. The drum rotates opposite the spring on the brake band so it is loosened by the rotation under load (cable being pulled out) the drum turns with the spring and the brake band is lock onto the drum. The other master cylinder on the control unit operates a slave cylinder that releases the brake band by pushing the spring end of the band opposite the spring pressure. The control unit has an over-center position so the brake can be locked in the released position so the cable can be pulled out by hand, there is no power-out on this winch so cable size is limited. Care must be used when releasing the brake as it goes from brake to free-wheel and you can have a birds nest of 9/16” cable instantly.

probably would have 3 or 4 settings - power in, power out, free spool , & lock.
maybe try to fit lever in , or over stub sticking out & see what happens?

May have to set PTO lever on machine it is mounted on too.
