Got the 40 in the shop and noticed the left brake band doesn't appear to be going around the drum. It's cock-eyed if you follow me. I imagine it's been this way for 30 years which explains why the left brake doesn't work well. That and the gallon and a half of 90 weight someone put in there. Short of pulling the final is there any way to push the brake band back to the "right" position and keep it there? I tried prying it over but it doesn't seem to want to stay.

I imagine the bottom of the band is more to the center of the tractor than the top. There is a pin on the final housing that must mate with the fitting on the bottom of the band when the final is put on. You MAY be able to loosen the band completely and work it back onto the pin. But like Lavoy says, the band is probably cut in two or at least warped so it won"t stay on the pin. He sells good bands. If you replace the clutch, follow his probable advice and use 420 parts.

There is a "step" cast into the bottom of the track clutch housing to keep the brake band in place. If yours is out of place, it is most likely sitting partially on top of this, and it will be almost impossible to get it in the proper position. Also, if it is up on the step, the band will most likely be almost cut in two.
If there is gear lube in the housing, the clutch discs will be shot too.
