Hello, I have a D3B Cat Dozer with pedal steer.
I have developed a need for a bigger dozer and have read where John Deere 850B's are pedal steer. Also they are hydrostat drive. Can any one tell me if it operates the same and how the hydrostat drive works. Is there any other dozers of this size with pedal steer?
Thanks.

Don't mess with the 850. Get a D-6. I've spent years trying to adjust the Deere hydrostatics to perform identical to the other side..Most won't.

I looked into buying an 850B...talked to service manager at local JD. If you ever have to work on one side, you may just do them both because you will have to do the other side in short order. He told me they had repaired an 850B a couple of weeks earlier and the bill was $24,000 for both sides...very expensive! John Deere always said they were good for 9000-10000 hours, but there are a lot of them around for sale at 7000 hours for some reason!

John Deere called it"s system dual path hydrostatic drive.
The engine drives a splitter gear box, which turns the blade/loader hydraulic pump, and a driveshaft for each left and right variable transmission pumps.
Each pump feeds a variable hydraulic transmission motor, which turns the gears, and final drives.
The pumps, motors and brakes are controlled by pilot oil pressure, thru the valve systems.
The left and right tracks are matched for speed and direction by adjusting the valve system.
