What is the correct starting sequence for a Cat. 955L Trackloader?? I have been told there is a correct way and a not so correct way.
I have a battery box switch installed too.
Do you need ether in cold weather?
Hope someone will post their methods that put less wear and tear on the engine, etc.
Thanks, Catman

Here is what you do Catman. Make sure the batteries are charged up good and the GlowPlugs draw 20 Amps(5Amps per Cyl). Then Hold the GlowPlugs on for a Minute above freezing, Two Min below freezing. Crank for a few seconds with the fuel off, then pull the fuel on and it should start up. If you pull the fuel on and it puffs out white smoke and doesn't fire shut off the fuel and start over, cranking a bit longer before pulling on the fuel. PreCombustion Chamber Diesel Engines have a low nozzel pressure and require more cyl heat to fire but run cleaner.

If engine is not worn to the point of low compression, glow plugs should be all that is ever needed to start these older engines. We have a 60A 955H at work that we use to block our gate at night.(bad neighborhood)Tractor has boo-coo hrs.on it.On the coldest of mornings the old girl never fails to start using glow plugs only.Ether is not only harder on the engine,it is also harder on the starting system as the engine has to be cranked over longer to get the ether into the cyls.In short, get your glow plugs working and that will be all you'll ever need.
