I stumbled accross a 1938 AC model M crawler, which may be an orchard model, since it is only about 5 feet wide. It is supposed to run, has about 50% undercarriage. The owner got tired of hand cranking it, so added an electric starter. It has no generator, and has magneto ignition. It is fairly straight, it has no pto or hydraulics. The owner is asking $1,000. I am a JD tractor collector and restorer, and usually don"t notice other makes very often, but this is a neat little crawler, so I am wondering if this is a "leave-er-rite" as in- "leave her right" there or a good deal?? Does anyone want to venture thier opinion on this?

I have one that my grandfather bought in 1940 from a trade school in Kansas. They used to practise working on it and then he used it to farm with. They are okay for what they are. It is about five feet wide and I think that was normal for them. It has no pto or hydraulics and is pretty much just a traction engine/ log skidder. They were actually simply the carry over from the Monarch Company style. AC didn't have any input other than buying Monarch and continuing the same model productions. I would be interested in the one you found if you don't want it.

I would look into it. Ask the owner if you could get it running and check it out (I have trouble buying stuff like that without seeing it do what it's "supposed" to do). The M is getting pretty hard to find parts for, but if it's in the shape he says it's in, it probably won't take anything major to put into shape. I know alot of people are pretty brand-loyal, but I don't think any of the "green guys" would shun you for going orange (just don't make a habit of it! LOL) I say - GO FOR IT!!
