The swing cylinder which is the drum/rotor type, is leaking fluid out around the top rotor shaft. I ordered a new O-ring and backup washer, and plan to get into it. I just recently bought this backhoe and it looks like the top plate has been replaced recently, it is the only part with no paint, and it looks like the collars that bolt the rotor to the swing frame are new. Is there any other reason for this to leak? Suggestions?

Hi JD:

I just read your reply on the leaky JD500A.

I have a JD400 with a 9400 series backhoe which has the dreaded rotary swing cylinder. Although I had mine rebuilt last year which fixed the leak, I am still unhappy with the action of the swing (jerky, poor braking, and not very powerful. I would like very much to convert it to a dual cylinder type swing.

When I asked my Deere about a possible coversion kit, they really couldn't help me (while they have great to work with they are an Ag dealer).

Are these conversions kits available from Deere?

Many thanks for any info. you can give me.

I'm not up with the latest when it comes to after-market parts - but . . . I was a Deere mechanic for a long time, starting in the 1960s. We had a miserable time with all the Deere hoes than used the barrel cylinder setup. Chronic leakers and low swing power. Some time in the early 80s, Deere began to cease production of many of the larger replacement parts and was offering "change-over" kits instead, which converted many of the barrel-swing cylinder hoes over to dual, separate, hydraulic cylinders instead. At that time, we had made efforts to reclaim worn parts by welding and machining for those reluctant to spend the high dollars on a change-over kit. So, I don't know where that leaves you. And maybe, since then, someone has started offering aftermarket parts? On the smaller hoes, the barrel in good shape offered very little swing power. Since you've basically got a 3020 painted yellow with a hoe and loader on it, maybe the barrel is a little bigger than what was used on the 1010s, 350s, 2010s, early 450s, etc.? I've got a 300 Deere hoe that has a single swing cylinder - it's a conventional piston and barrel cylinder, but has only one cylinder for left and right swings - does it all with linkage - but still works a lot better than any barrel setup I've used. Allis and Massey Ferguson also had barrel cylinders for awhile.

Hey Jdemaris how much are you talking about for the conversion to cylinders? Mine wont hold position and I was thinking about rebuilding it, but if parts are going to be hard to get I might think diferently.

Then what you are saying is it might not be the seal, and could be a worn rotor or top plate? Is it possible to maybe double up on the O ring or add some kind of gasket? It seems to be leakeing equally around the rotor, and its not a whole lot, maybe an ounce or two an hour. Thanks, Ken
