my HD 6 has been overheating. Told to flush out radiator and check thermostat and water pump. I have instructions on how to get to thermostat but how will I know after looking at it if that is the problem or not. A thermostat would have tell me that it wasn't working for me to know. Same with the water pump. All belts seem to be fine and turning like they are supposed to. You may have guessed that I'm no mechanic.

Flow testing the radiator is a really good start. as old as the unit is i'm sure that calcification and scale has probably closed off the majority of cooling tubes. also check the radiator for obstuctions in the fins. weed seeds, debris, bugs, etc can build up over time therby reducing airflow across the core. also check the fan blades. some of those units had fans that were reversable. air flow should blow towards the front of the unit, not from the front to back. some adjustable fan blades can be put in a position where they don't push or pull air...might be worth a check. one last thot is to check the integrity of the radiator hoses. some hoses, when they age, get spongy. when the unit is pulled up to governed speed the water pump circulates the coolant so fast that an older hose might actually collapse cutting off the flow of coolant....

Checkign a water pump, you look for play in the
shaft. Any play,replace the pump.

Also you should consider have the radiator flow
and pressure tested. Your radiator may be plugged
and require rodding out.

Have you removed the radiator cap, started the unit up, and looked into the filler neck of the radiator once the engine reaches normal operating temperature, to see if the fluid is moving? I've seen water pumps on Case and John Deere engines that when cool, the pumps would circulate the water fine, but after they reach a certain temperature, the shaft would spin inside the impellar. (If the fluid bubbles out of the filler neck, you've got other problems). Good luck

Put the thermostat in a pan of water and heat it on the stove. It should open, depending on the calibration at something less than boiling. In this case it doesn't hurt to watch it boil regardless of what your mother told you. Good luck.
