I use to be a buyer for a large contracting firm Ask for a oil sample and check the finals out also on track machines. the diesel fuel that japan burns is different than usa fuel ..meaning the kerosene add over there usually burns up the turbos after american diesel is added to them .. these are just a few things to check for on any foreign unit..

I have had 2. A Cat 307B and a Hitachi EX60. Both are grey market and both have been great machines. The internet alows you to get part numbers if you need to and you just give the local dealer the number and the parts are usually next day. The Cat is identical to the units sold in N.A. Just have to be careful on emmision stickers. The engine may be the same but if it doesn't have the sticker it can't legally be sold in the US. My Hitachi has a Nissan engine in it where as the NA. units had Isusu. The local dealer can't seem to find part numbers for the Nissan engine so I contact some of the import dealers on the internet and they have been more than helpful getting me the part number. So far getting a thermostat and valve cover gasket have been no problem. Local dealer doesn't mind if you just call him and give him a number to order. I have put 450 hours on these 2 with nothing to speak of as problems. Good Luck. Kevin

I am by no means an expert, but I've had a few.
If you stick with the major brands (Hitachi, Kumatsu, Cat etc.) you shouldn't have a problem. Also stay with common models such as Hitachi EX 60, 120, 200, 220. They make some wierd off models like 50 and 75 - probably nothing wrong with them, just not so common. Word of warning though. Those machines may have the he!! beat out of them. Then again they may be a bargin. Don't believe the hours. Get them independently inspected. Find out as much about the dealer as you can. Is he honest? Try to see the machine as soon as it comes out of the container or off the deck - befor they get a chance to paint it. Nothing wrong with a new paint job, but what are they covering up?

What extras can you get with the machines. Most excavators from Japan come with one pin on bucket, a quasi half a$$ digging/ half a$$ cleanout. Try to get a quick change put on and get two buckets.

Make sure they adjust the controls to either JD or Cat so it can be opperated here.

My NAPA can get me most of the filters and belts etc needed, anything they can't the dealers can get.

BTW - for some reason fuel systems seem to gunk up on both our machines. I solved the problem by putting a fuel water seperator in befor the fuel filter, change it twice a year and no problems.

Good luck, Grant
