The Parking Brake on my 310D will hold very well from the tractor coasting backwards but will not hold the machine from rolling forwards worth a darn. I have adjusted it according to instructions. Had the entire park brake unit rebuilt by a JD Shop a year ago. What could be wrong with the blasted thing?

My guess is that whatever needs to be done, cannot be done externally. The early 310D's had the same internal linkage that was used with the hand operated park prakes on 310C's. This linkage always broke when the new spring applied, hydraulic released brake actuators came into being. There are beefier parts that are used in there and if they werent all changed when it was repaired the last time, then that may be the problem. Also if you arent the only operator, then some people have a bad habit of flipping the park brake on as the machine is coasting to a stop. This tends to put a strain on the park brake as it is an "instant on" type brake...quite a shock to all its components. You have to drop the transaxle assembly to do anything in there...

It sounds to me like the rivets holding the brake materiel to the shoe have sheared off. Remove the left wheel, then remove the left axle assy. the parts can then be replaced in this manner rather than removing the whole trans axle assy. Pretty common failure if not waiting to come to a complete stop before applying the park brake. What is happening in there is when going backwards the materiel is wadding up and stopping the machine, while going forwards there isn't enough drag on the brake band to stop it. The park brake looks like an oversized v-belt and the "drum" is a big pulley splined to the axle shaft.
