I have found a 450c in my area. The motor runs good but at speed smokes. I think it is unburnt fuel. Also it will not move (Hi, Low or Rev.) If I push the foot clutch you can hear all the parts in the trans stop turning so I suspect it is not the main clutch. He said it use to try to move (jump) but has since stop even that. I have read that it could be oil level or clutch packs but I do not know enough about them to say. The blade goes up and down and in all other directions (up is slow) It will pick the front up off the ground. Also, there is some type of fluid coming out of the left side sprocket, maybe a seal? He is asking $6900 for it. Does anybody have any ideas as to the possible problem and is it worth the chance? Thanks for any input ya"ll may have!

I think I have looked at the same machine. I raised the seat to check what I think is the steering clutch oil and found no indication of oil on the dipstick. My question is how low is low? If the oil is not touching the dipstick, how much would need to be added? How much oil does the reservoir hold? Am I correct in thinking that the dipstick under the seat is the steering clutch oil reservoir only? Where do you check the hydrualic oil that provide oil for the blade? I haven"t been able to locate an owner/operator manual yet. If I fill this JD 450C with steering clutch oil and it starts to move the guy is going to go up on his price. I hate to repair it for him and it wind up costing me $2,000 now that the machine will move.

Thanks

Price seems a bit steep for a tractor that won't move. 4-5K would be better. There is an adjustment inside the clutch housing that is noted for backing off. If it has backed off all the way this may cause the tractor not to move. I wouldn't plan on it being that simple though. You may as well figure on a trans. overhaul. We do them here and the cost is usually between $1000-$1500 labor. Parts can run from $500-$2000. Plan on tearing into that final drive as well. If you do get into it, keep us in mind for parts. We have new parts available for both the trans. and final drives.

I figure the smoke is white and smells of diesel? Mabye just an injector problem since it runs ok otherwise. I think I would have to do a pressure test on the transmission and see what the story is on that before I committed to buy it, alot of times those 6-way blade handles get so much slop in them they wont activate the spool far enough to make the hydraulics work as fast as they could and the parts to tighten that back up are ridiculously expensive. Compare the distance between the back of the roller frame and the closest tooth on the sprocket, both right and left sides seem to be the same? or is the side thats leaking closer? Or any evidence of where the sprocket has actually touched the roller frame, this is a good indication of whether it's only a seal leaking or bad bearings making the seal leak. The price is ok if theres no major problems but personally I'd rather be considerably lower to buy it like it is. A 450c in my area running and working about 10-12k.

I tried out a 450C today that I'm thinking of buying. It ran good, everything worked great on it. But the temp gauge only came up to about 150 deg. I assume that means it needs a thermostat? The dealer is wanting $16,750 for it. It's been used on a farm for the last ten or so years, that's what I'm intending to do with it also. Anything I need to look for before buying?
Thanks.
