I recently boght a 1929 Caterpillar Fifteen in good running condition. However, before I picked up the tractor it was moved outside and they did not realize there was not any anti-freeze in it and the block, head, and bottom readiator tank froze and cracked. They offered to refund my money or have it repaired. If we decide to fix it we will send the broken pieces to a company that specializes in casting repairs. My question is how hard will it be to find engine parts like gaskets, rings, bearings, water pump and carburetor parts? And do you think I should get my money back or have it repaired? The tractor comes from a one family owner, the under carriage is 60-70% good. metal is straight and just surface rust. I paid $4800 for it. I appreciate any comments!

A while back I bought a Cat that was basicly the same machine in the same condition. It is an 8C Twenty. I paid $1200 for it. Last year I got tired of seeing it sitting there and repaired the cracks with JB Weld. I now have a good running little Cat
that leaks no coolant. It cost me very little to repair. I vee'd out the cracks just like you would for welding. I let the JB set up 1 week between coats. The stuff is just as strong (or stronger) than the old cast iron. The job made me a little late for planting potatoes last year but I will be right on time for this year. I crank it over a little with the choke on ignition off, turn the ignition on and one pull and she is off and running.

Lesson to be learned there, but is water over the dam now, I'll bet you won't find many in that condition, sounds like a complete unit. Not all that familiar with the Fifteen, but you will find some great resources on these 2 websites:

Billy, thanks for the input. I actually work for a Caterpillar dealership for the last twenty years as a heavy equip mechanic. The tractor came with the original parts and owners instruction book. I checked some of the the part numbers in the computer system and they were good numbers and in the system, but they all would say discontinued part. Inside the front cover of the parts book was a folded piece of paper that had a list of all of the tools that came equiped with the tractor under the seat it was signed from some one from Cat and dated 12/15/29

Sounds like you've got an adavantage working at the dealer and with a mechanical background to boot, sure sounds like a great find, original books and dealer invoice's and related paperwork is always a bonus !

I think they are working together now, I recall seeing some posts from Guy Reed, last year on the ACMOC site, he seemed interested in offering this service to people on the BB, and I recall Guy moved, it appears the website I posted is current, I kinda lost track. Really interesting processes they use, sounds cost effective to use in the industrial world, glad to see they have an interest in helping people with antique equipment too.

Billy,

I have chatted with both of them in the email,
really nice to talk to. Guy posted on one of the boards here last year , the local patrons blew
him off like a salesman. I don't think most
have any understanding of what it takes to repair
castings. I do some oxy/acet cast iron welding ,but
nothing like what they do. I mostly do manifolds
and smaller castings. Here is a link to my web site and there is a link in there to get to many pictures.

I hear you George, and agree, I'm sure a lot of people may not have an understanding of this kind of work, including me, LOL!
