Hello, on the 450 john deere reverser can you tell me if the oil manifold bore has to be perfectly smooth for good operation, mine has grooves about .010" deep. I put the old sealing rings in the grooves in the bore and they look like they would seal ok, they have locking tabs so they can only expand very little, of course I would replace the sealing rings, they are only $30 but a new manifold is $900. I did find a refurbished manifold at partsfinder.com for $372 but Im wondering how it was repaired. Do you think these could be sleeved? the bore is only 2 1/4" not sure if they have sleeves that small. Thanks for any info, JP

I assume it would work, but keep in mind the new rings probably wont't be cast-iron with locking tabs. They are more apt to be one-piece rubber rings. If they are, get some and check the fit. That's what was done on the 350 reversers for sure, I'm not sure about the 2010 or 450 HL-R. I haven't worked for a Deere dealer since 1990. At the time, we only used Deere replacement parts, and they weren't SO expensive that we had to make do with worn components (except during the long Deere strike when the United Auto Workers Union held Deere hostage). Things are different now, and parts prices are out of this world! I just picked up some small parts from a Case dealer for my 580CK and almost had a stroke. Ordered a bag of shims that I thought would cost around $5 or $10 - well, they were $17 apiece and came in a bag of five. Brake linings were $200. So, I wound up with a bunch of small parts that fit in a shoe box and the cost was $512. I was expecting it to be a total around $75. Maybe now, due to the cost of new parts, someone has found a way to reclaim these parts. I haven't had to find out yet. We need the Chinese to start making replacement parts. They make lots of stuff for Ford Model As and Ts. But, someday they will be turning out atomic bombs for $29.50 each, and then we'll be in big trouble.

Just want to correct something I wrote. If the rings you're talking about are in a rotational environment, e.g. as is in your manifold (as I remember it), then the new ones will probably still be cast-iron with locking ends. The rings in the clutch packs that only slide in and out and don't get rotational wear are the ones that have been replaced with rubber rings.
