Engine rebuilt and strong. Pulls good and turns good until hot. Once hot stops pulling good, doesn't turn very well and is hard to shift. The hydrolic pump is noisy & is worse during these problems. Is it possibly the hydrolic pump controls the steering cluches, shift mechanism and is the culprit in the pulling problem? The dozer really works well until it gets hot, usually after 30 minutes to an hour of use. What all does the hydrolic pump control? Thanks in advance.

Just popped the tranny cover and fired it up. No leaks, so I ran it for about 30-45 minutes to see if it would leak after the oil thinned up, but it didn't. I did, however, notice the dipstick under the seat showed low, and a gallon filled it up. I assume that dipstick is "common" to the same area under the cover? Anyway, I ran it for about another 30 minutes and, at times, it seemed to not pull as good, but usually worked it through. It turned good the whole time. I don't know if I ran it long enough or not. I'll give it the BIG test tomorrow afternoon when I have more time. Perhaps the trans pump is worn and I may need to go to a multi-grade oil like a 20W-50 so when it warmed up it would keep the oil thicker. Any other ideas? I assumed if it pulled good and turned good for the better part of an hour, then there couldn't be too much terribly wrong. What do you think?

Allen, don't use Multi Grade, it's not good for your trans. Should use Cat TDTO4 or equivalent. You may have a worn pump but I think you said it was making a noise so check the clamps on the piece of hose in the suction line and all connections in the line. Clean out the magnetic screen too, it's under a 4"square cover. The pump might be drawing air. If it works cold then gives trouble hot you usually have a leak somewhere or a worn pump. If you could get a 600 PSI gauge to put in the plug in the top of the trans filter it would tell you a lot. The hole has a 9'16NF stor boss. Check the pressure hot at high and low idle and in all speeds and For and Rev. Should be around 300 to 350 psi and hold 90% of the High idle pressure at low idle.

Bob, Could you email directly so we could communicate a little easier? My email address is allen@smartstoreinc.com. I promise not to bother you in excess. I don't know anything about this dozer; it's my first one. I didn't know about the trans filter, magnetic screen or suction line locations. Thanks.

Allen, clean off the trans cover, the big one not the small plate on the cover. Take off the cover and start the engine. Look for oil spraying out in the RH Rear corner. There is a short tube there that feeds the oil from the trans pump to the valve, the two O rings are most likely blown off of it. That will give the problems you mention and make the torque over heat too. Come on back with what you find.

Buddy, Does the hydraulic pump control the final drives and steering like I suspect? I assume you mean the hydraulic filters and fluid? I changed the upper filter and fluid and it's still nice and clear. Is there another filter somewhere I need to replace? Thanks.
