This is a follow up on a previous post I made. I"m looking into buying what I thought was an JD 850D Dozer. I took a look at it today, and it does have a tag that says 850D, but this tag has DUPLICATE PLATE stamped on the tag. I"ve got a picture of it if anyone wants to see it. Also the cab has a tag on it with a different serial number. Why would they need a "duplicate plate" and would the cab have a different serial than the tractor? I"m a little confused as to what it actually is. In my previous post (2/20/05) 2X4 stated in his post that there was a D series that came out before the C series.?? Is this a 850 or could it be a 850D, or does the "D" have anything to do with it being a duplicate tag. I haven"t been able to get ahold of the owener. I believe he is having health issues and thats one reason he is selling it. Thanks

There is an 850 listed as a 1982 with that serial number ..well..the last 6 digits.. came from a dealer in South Carolina...email me directly if you want any particulars.

I'd appreciate any info you can give me. Horsepower? Good things about them, and troubled spots to look for. Also, is $25,000 way out of line. I'm seeing a good many for sale around $16,000-$20,000. They just aren't local. It has 7000 hours. Thanks again to all.

Horsepower ? ..not sure...enough to push a blade full of dirt...Do u know how to check the undercarriage ?? thats a MAJOR item and expensive if its worn to the point of needing replacement. Those transmissions can leak quite a bit and its tough finding people that can work on them with any knowledge..theres alot that can get "messed up" in the wrong hands...The adjustment of the transmissions and their controls can be tricky if it has any mistracking. trying to get them to travel in a straight line can be tricky... The track frames pivot near the rear, and ride on a shaft lubed with gear oil. There is an oil check plug on the side of the cover at the end of the shaft. See if theres any oil in there..if empty, or dry, then that could be trouble. Make sure theres oil in the splitter drive gear box. Theres a dipstick under the floor board for that. Theres a set of transmission filters on the right side.. I believe theres 4 of them in that compartment that is the hydrostatic oil tank. Get a set of filters and cut open the old ones to see if theres any trace of metal. Remove the level check plugs on the rear of each final drive...remove the plugs slowly because if theres an internal leak , they could be pressurized and you'll be wearing a gallon or two of gear oil. Check the outer planetary oil level too...its in the center of the sprocket. If any compartment is overfull, it means that either the transmission motor seal or the park brake seals are leaking, a major undertaking to repair..

Most machinery manufacturers will serialize machine cabs and post them with plates that are different from the tractor s/n. That itself is not unusual.

However, the 'DUPLICATE PLATE' thing suggests that JD reissued a s/n plate to the owner of the machine to replace one that was removed (possibly by a thief before the insurance company recovered it.) That and the fact that John Deere never produced an 850 'D' model (unless they did so in the past few weeks) makes the whole thing sound screwy.

then why, over the years, do auction results books repeatedly list an 850D from all different parts of the U. S.?

Never was an 850D ...never....If a s/n tag is missing a dealer can go thru a process of identifying by other means...theres other numbers stamped in various parts of the machine , and get a replacement ID tag. 850's tags were in a spot that made them vulnerable to being destroyed anyways.. The D may signify a duplicate tag has been issued ...I'm not sure about that ...Auction companies are there for one reason...to make a buck ..they couldn't care less about "authenticity" or correctness...if they can pawn something off as being newer than it actually is then they win...the seller wins and they win.... the progression has been 850 ...then 850B ...and now currently 850C...
