Is a D2 Cat worth restoring? What would I have when I was done with the project? What is parts availability like for the old Cats? High priced like Deere or worse? Thanks in advance.

You are going to have to look at it real good. How good is the under carriage?; does the track show alot of wear?; doe the bushings look worn and off-center?; is it runable?; and, do the clutches work? If you see that you do not need to spend alot of money on the under carriage, and the engine is in running condition, I would say it would be worth restoring. Here are some prices on the under carriage that I encountered. The idler bearings were $29.09/each and you need 16; the washers are $8.27/ea and you need 16; shims are $2.98/ea. I never replaced the track on mine, but I did some research. Sometimes you can buy a used set or you can have the bushings pressed out by a machine shop. The price is $2000 on up. Are you planning to paint it yourself - or are you having it painted by someone else. To have a contractor paint it is alot faster, but it is costly and takes some of the pride away from the one doing the restoration. I, myself, have gotten alot of enjoyment in disassembling, sandblasting, and reassembling my Cat. Some of the engine work I had to have done by machine shop which was $500 for the reground crank, sleeve installed in liner $125, other costs are sand, air compressor use, paint, cleaning tools, solvents, and lots and lots of time and patience.
