HD3 axle retainer problems

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this. I broke the pin off this retainer again, but can't figure out why. It appears that the axle is walking the pin up out of the hole, then the fingers on the clutch catch it and break it off. I have had the clutch and axle out, and the fit on the splines is very good (doesn't appear to have slop, or walk around). It has happened 5 or 6 times so far. There should be no pressure on the retainer clip, as it just keeps the axle from sliding out of the clutch. It, also, only does it on the right clutch, so I wonder if it's just luck-of-the-draw, or if something is worn on that clutch that I'm overlooking. I think that I'm going to make this clip a little different than the original. I think the clip should be made just a little longer, and the pin should be in the center of the clip, instead of the end. That way, it should have much less chance of walking out, since it will have spring pressure holding it from both sides of the pin, instead of just the one side. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I think your on to it. If the clutch hub hole was messed up this would do it. That make alot of sense. Good luck

Im thinking that the pin is not going deep enough into the hole.just me two cents. Ive done several of these and never had your problem,Could your clutch fingers be sticking out to far? did you have the clutch rebuilt? try reverseing the clip/pin maybe the torque in one direction is pusing the pin out.

Glenn,
Thanks for the reply. The clutch has not been rebuilt, but when I had it out last summer, everything checked OK. The clip goes all the way down, and the pin lacks about 1/64" from touching the bottom of the hole in the axle. I had had this problem a few times before, and the clip had finally broken at the pin, so I made a new one then. It was about 1/2" longer on the end opposite the pin, so as to get a little more holding power and still be able to get it over the axle. That may have helped, I'm not sure. I think that the problem is the hole in the clutch hub. I think it is wallered out enough that when on a hillside, the axle gets some side pressure on the pin; the hole is sloppy enough that the pin tries to twist in the hole, raising one corner of the clip. When the clip raises enough, and the clutch is depressed, a clutch finger will catch the end of the clip. I have made another new clip, this time putting the pin about 1" from the end. I think this will not only give just a little more holding power on that side, but if the pin does try to rise, it shouldn't be able to raise the corner of the clip. It's supposed to warm up some today and tommorow (been in the 20's-30', strong north wind, and some snow), so hopefully I will get a chance to put the new clip in and give a try. I think if this doesn't fix it, I will pull the clutch, tear it down, and try putting a new hole in the clutch hub that fits a little closer. But I figured I would do that last - try all the easy stuff first.
Thanks again for your input. I always apprieciate a second opinion. Lots of good info out here on the forum.
Have a good day!
