Everything works fine until it warms up,then just stops engaging. 1989 d4h-track. Let it cool down for an hour and goes again.

Jim, you are loseing trans pump oil some where and causing the trans to over heat. Overheating increases the pump oil loss. The first thing you should do is take off some tinware over the trans shift lever and look for twigs or garbage that has fallen in there around the link from the trans lock out lever link to the park brake valve lever on the steering valve. The park brake valve blocks oil to the brake release and dumps the brake oil. If the linkage is not free it will hold the valve halfway open and let the pump oil leak off. A pen fallen down in there will do this it doesn't take much.

Jim I dont know if your d4h is the same as a d5h but if it is I had a d5h do the same thing.Try pulling your steering clutch levers one at the time with the trans in gear when it wont move.If the trans engages and it starts pulling you most likely have sealing rings on the shaft going out through the final drive eat up.This trans has to build up 400 psi to release the brakes before fluid pressure will go to the trans control body to put it in gear.Mine worked fine until the fluid got hot ,then it was losing enugh pressure that it would drop below 400 psi and the trans would come out of gear.Pulling the steering levers one at the time will isolate which side the problem is on.If yours is the same,I hope this helps!

Does your D5 quit in all gears? Found out mine only quits in first forward, and reverse. Are there any clutch-pak adjustments, or maybe second and third doesn't require so much fluid. I did find a possible leak in the left steering. pressure drops. Thanks,Jim

They are similar Haley, that test works best with a pressure gauge in the trans pump, then you don't even need to move the tractor. The low pressure causes the trans to need resetting(shift to neutral and back to gear) before it will drive again. That was a common problem when your tractor was new but the seals are better now.

Thanks for trying to help me. Did find possible leak in steering drive, but only first forward, and reverse quits. Can start in second, or third, then down shift to lower gears. Just putting dozer in frist doesn't have any pressure after it stops working. While it's cold, one pump is at 350psi, and the other is 300. Maybe you can help more, Thanks, Jim
