Hi.
I've got a 1973 jcb 3d mk ii that I'm trying to id the engine on. I'm after the type of engine (nuffield, leyland, bmc ???) so I can dig out a manual for it. Can anyone help.

Serial # 3d 103624
Tractor serial # 384B 131168
Engine serial # 14221

Its diesel 4 cylinder, 4 speed manual, with high/low selector next to gear knob on floor.
Injector pump is on front left side of the engine as you look from the front, with primer pump on the middle right. Two fuel filters on top left of engine.
Anyone got any ideas ? Are there any distinguishing marks to look for ?

Stuart

Your JCB is built on a Nuffield tractor which was part of BMC,originally the engine was a BMC,Leyland took over BMC 69/70,the engine is 3.8 liters, the 4.98NT 4 cylinders 98mm bore, don't know about the NT maybe none turbo,JCB may still do a manual for it.

HI. I've been scanning through the forum and you seem to know just about everything to do with JCB's. I've just bought ( 2 months ago)a 3c 111 with a 4/98 engine. When I bought it, it started great, but after 10 mins would stop. It started again and would run fine for a half hour or so before stopping again. This got worse until it wouldn't start at all. I've changed all three fuel filters and cleaned the mechanical fuel filter. It still starts great but when using the hydraulics hard the engine stops, even raising or lowering the jacks cuts out the engine. It started hunting too. I can't get any revs on it at all now, it just ticks over. I think there may be a leak of water from the head. The radiator seems to be under pressure. Have you come across this problem before? Any help you can give me would be most welcome. P.S. I live in Scotland.
Regards
Billy

Hi again AJ. Thanks for that.

So it was manufactured by leyland. Does the 4.98 relate to the size of the engine e.g. 4.98 litres, or is it an engine type code. Does the NT mean anything specific.

Presumably this is a standard kind of engine, any ideas where a manual for the beast could be found. I've managed to source a manual for the digger from ebay as you suggested before, but not for the engine itself. Do you know if the engine lived in another beast before jcb got hold of it ?

Hi. Engine ID refers to 4 cylinders 98mm bore. NT refers to Non Turbo (can't remember suffix for turbo models, several were used). Also used in various guises in Leyland/Marshall tractors (498,270,272,702 for starters), Leyland Terrier wagons, Petbow generators and other applications. In my opinion it's one of the best all round diesels to be found in it's power range. The 6/98 was pretty handy too...
