I've recieved good advise here,so I have another question. My d4h, I figured out will operate in second and third, but first, forward and reverse stops pulling after about an hour of operation. Haven't taken the belly pan off yet,but see visible leakage. Can take off in second, then down shift to first, and pulls until gets in a bind. Will push dirt, but nothing like stumps, quits then. I've only had this unit for two weeks, and don't know much about it. Do know the transission was rebuilt. Local cat dealer sent it to be re-built. Cost 11000.00 in 1999. Hope that's not the way I have to go now. Thanks for any help, Jim

Jim, you need a pressure gauge to confirm this but I think you have an oil leak in the 1 st speed clutch, think it may be the rotating clutch but not sure. Did you check the Park Brake linkage from the trans lock out lever down by the shift lever?

I noticed the parking brake might need a little adjustment. I think tomorrow,Sat. I'm going to drop the pan to see where the trans fluid is coming from. I have 300psi on one pump and 350 on the other, but when it quits,no pressure in first.

Jim, the 350 you got was the Speed Clutch pressure and the 300 Directional Clutch pressure. When it stops you have no pressure in first but I assume you have in 2 and 3. That sounds like first speed clutch is leaking. If you still have your gauges there see how much pressure you gain when hot at low idle when you pull back each steering lever and both together as Haley said earlier. The clutches are pressurized to drive so any leakage will show up as a pressure gain when you pull the levers back. Also see how much you gain by putting the trans lock lever down. If you gain by putting it down then it might not be going all the way when you release the brake. You have to pull the axles 4 of them to get the trans out.

Thanks again BoB. I need to get a parts book,so I can order what I need. Sounds like the first gear clutch pak. I'm pretty good at taking things apart, but don't you have to have speical tools when taking apart, springs, etc? I hate to take it to a dealer, they charge to much. Have any ideas?

Jim, the dealer can print you some parts pages of the trans so you can take them home and mark off what you need. The trans should have a serial# so take that with you to get the right pic's. To pull it out, Drain all the oil, take off the shift cables and drive shaft. Take the small final drive covers off to get the axles out.You need a bolt welded into a 4' long pipe to get the inner ones out and back in. I think it's a 1/2"NC, whatever fits the outer will fit the inner. In addition to the ring of bolts holding it in there are two sets of assembley bolts. Take out only the ones that go through into the tractor housing, leave in the ones holding the two plates together. Make a plate like the round PTO cover and weld a 2 1/2" or 3" pipe to it about 2' long to lift with as you pull it out. It will roll out on two rails. When you get it out as far as it will come on the rails, set it on a stand, put an eye bolt into the housing and lift it up and out. Take out the assembley bolts you left in and seperate the trans from the bevelgear and pinion housing and away you go. Keep track of where the axles came out of and everything else you take apart.
