We have just fitted a Perkins 4-236 to a TD9. Has anyone else had a similar experience with this engine swap?

Hound, this is the second TD9 we have. (The other has the original petrol/diesel engine setup. ) It was purchased not running but with, of all things a 318 Chrysler V8 fireball engine. The V8 needed a lot of work to get it operational and we decided it would be better to fit a diesel. We knew of another Perkins 4-236 transplant and we were able to get an adaptor plate ready made. We found a suitable Perkins out of a Header and the installation was pretty straight forward. Starts at the turn of a key and for the first time we were able to free the tracks and get some drive.
We are in Adelaide, South Australia. If you have any questions or need photos, let me know.

Interesting John. As have just discovered my little "project" has pitting in bore 2&4. All I had to do when we bought it was clean up, weld repair radiater bottom tank, get three valves made and a gasket set.Had all that then While working off farm for twelve months it got wet. As I understand it you have one with original motor type So would you recommend persisting or go with the Perkins.
It's got pretty good track gear/ needs work onrams If so can you advise where to locate adapter plate? Enquireys so far quote 500 - $600 for sleeve/piston kit (each).

Robert, in the long term, we believe the Perkins to be the better bet. Parts are more readily available, it is easier to start. An adaptor plate will cost around $600 and we picked up a good 4-236 for $1,500 (off an old header).
Shop around for an engine and do the sums to see if it is worthwhile for you.

Hello. Where would I find this adapter plate at? Would it be the same for a TD9 crawler

I've got a TD9 Drott, great machine. Hope yours works well with your transplant. I have the 282 diesel and it runs great. Was there a problem that led you to go with a transplant? Is the power of the smaller engine going to be sufficient?

Go to the link for the redpower site.

Seann, the machine was purchased as a non runner but with a Chrysler petrol V8, We didn't even know if the drives or anything were serviceable. It is still a work in progress but at least we have been able to move it and check the drives etc. Left steering clutch is still bound up though. We fitted the Perkins 4-236 on recommendation of another TD9 operator who has worked his successfully with the same engine.
