Which one is the best?

I visited these forms months ago, trying to decide what piece of equipment to buy for working my land in preparation to build.

I narrowed the choices down to a crawler-loader and a backhoe-loader.

After mulling it over for a couple months, I decided the backhoe-loader is what I intend to purchase.

My price range is in the neighborhood of $15,000.

I've been looking at Cat, Deere, Case & Ford.

Is there one manufacturer that stands out above the rest?

Anyone manufacturer to make sure to stay clear of?

Allan ..I am on my second 580 Case. My current one is a 1991 SK 4x4 w/exthoe and I LUV it. Dealer support and parts are not a problem in Michigan. Just my $.10 (adjusted to inflation).

Ford is no more it and Case are Fiat controled. Get the best unit you can find for the money but deside on the type of controls and look for units so equiped, 4 stick, 3 stick, or 2 stick. Iv'e found it eaiser to teach people on 2 stick but thats me, each person has there own favorite on what they have used. Most units are set from the factory or by the dealer when purchased. Also try for 4wd it really makes the difference. Cat purchased part of Perkins to use there motors. All the Mfg make good and some bad units but like others have said its the dealer support that counts, and how the last owner took care of the unit. Allan

I own a 416 C and can verify it is an american made TLB. The hydraulic excavators are made by Mitsubishi and generally use Cat engines. I had a 312 that had a Mits engine in it. I think anything under a 315 has a Mits diesel. I have run a lot of these Deere( Hitachi), Case (Kobelco), Cat (Mitsubishi). Komatsu I believe makes their own, as well as Volvo. The Cat TLB use a perkins engine labeled a 3054, which is a 244 similar to half a dozen other apps. Buy a machine on dealer support and condition, I have a good cat dealer and a good deere dealer. I have cat because I can go there 24/7 to get parts and they usually have what I need on the shelf.

Hey ETD...I'm no expert on the TLB's (tractor loader backhoes), but I've always heard really good things about the Case 580 series. Rugged, tough, you can really do some digging (especially with an extendahoe). Im sure the Deere's are good too, as far as I know Cat TLB's are not really Cats but are made in Asia...and not that that's a bad thing, but just so you know their long developed excellent crawler reputation is not really applicable to their outsourced TLB's. I've also heard good things about Fords, especially that they have really powerful hydraulics. JCB's are priced decently up front, and seem to be good machines, but I heard their parts prices are extremely high, even slightly higher than Deere and Cat, plus delivery can take awhile (JCB is a British company).

Basically, I would see what good dealers are close to you. Then, in my opinion, I would go with a Case, Deere or Ford.

Good luck

I like to stay with Cat or Deere. They are an American Company that have been in exsistance for a long time and have not been taken over by other Companys. This allows them to have a great in depth parts supply and the dealers employees usally are quite helpfull with and have quite a bit of knowledge available on the machines. There is a seemingly endless supply of used parts available also. You will need parts of some sort or another with an older machine in this price range soon after purchasing it.

CASE seems to be predominant in my area, as far as used equipment.

As well as Ford...

If your budget is 15,000.00 that limits you to a 555 ford, a 580 Case, a 310 john Deere, or one of the JCD's. A 416 cat might fall in there. Of the models above I'd stick with the ford/Case/ JD. the newer cats are great machines as well as the newer JCB's, but they may be out of the price you mentioned. A 555E, 580 K, with 4x4 would be a great choice. Lots of people making a living every day with less machine.

Nat,

Those are the excat models I havw been looking at.

I definitely want a 4x4.

555 Ford, 580 Case & 416 Deere...

Prices seems to range from 15k to 20k on 85-90 models...

Like I said, I see a lot more CASE around here than anything...

Be careful about the case backhoes that you buy. We had a 580 D and E series with extendahoe and they were extremely light in the front end. Not sure about the standard stick models. We have a Cat 416C IT and it is a hoss. You maybe able to find a 416 B or 416 series II for your price range. I would not get a 416 series I machine. Jim
