Recently I replaced the injector pump on my JD450C. Before it would turn over about twice and start if it was 50 degrees or warmer. Now it will barely start above 70 degrees without starting fluid. When it starts it smokes alot until it warms up in 10 minutes or so. Can I make any adjustments to help this situation?

Mike

You didn't mention why you had the pump off, considering you say it was running good previously. Unless you've got the pump quite a bit out of time, it doesn't seem likely that the pump is causing the problem. Very often with the smaller Deere engines, the static pump timing needs to be advanced a few degrees more than what the book calls for - otherwise you get a lot of whitish smoke and skipping at cold start-up. I'd try that first. Generally speaking, if the fuel delivery was set low in the pump, it WOULD start very hard but wouldn't smoke. It also would be low on power, even when warmed up, with a low-fuel setting. If the fuel was set excessively high, it would start fine, have good power, but smoke quite a bit, especially under a load.

Did you align the timing marks when you installed it?

The injector pump went bad and it had to be replaced. I had a mechanic remove and replace the pump. I assume he aligned the marks. I was wanting to find out if I could make some adjustment myself without calling the mechanic back. Mike
