my 4 wheel drive case backhoe needs to have the front axle ball joints replaced. is this something a simple person like me could handle?

I did my SK axle and it can be a pain, but do-able. Use the BF pipe wrench you can find (w/cheater) and apply heat to the swivel case and twist pins while spraying PB blaster or equal between pin and housing. When you re-assemble, wire wheel the pins and inside of the housing and coat pin with anti-sieze (should slip right in). To remove the races in the axle I ran a bead of weld on the bearing suface of the race ( shrunk it)and it pryed out pretty easy. Hope this helps.

It can be a right SOB to get the old pins to come out,first try removing the shims from under the triangular plates on the pins,undo the three bolts on each pin and get the shims out,you may need to knock the pins home with a sledge hammer,(protect the grease nipples)I have posted a picture from the parts book so you can see the setup,its at the link below
