D31P-17 steering woes

Another Komatsu D31P question for you good folks. After operating this machine for only a very short period of time, it is evident that the left steering pedal is malfunctioning. In order to turn to the left, the pedal has to be depressed with extreme force, and after the engine loads and the rpm's drop, the machine finally jerks violently. On the right side, this does not happen, as the pedal requires normal effort to turn, and the engine does not bog down when doing it. My question: can the left side steering be adjusted? When depressing the pedal, is it disengaging the drive on that side, or applying the brakes, or both? Thanks for the help,
Tim

Are the steering pedals even if both are pushed at the same time? It sounds like the brake band is applying long before the clutches are disengaged, an out-of-whack adjustment would cause this. The brake band is really the only thing that should ever need adjusting, when you apply the pedal it is pushing a valve, usually located under the hood in front of the dash that supplies oil under pressure to release the clutches and also applies the brake band to turn the machine, the brake band is all mechanical linkage however, so it is a timing thing.

Thanks for the replies. OK, so as I understand, when the steering pedal is depressed, its dissengaging the clutch to the final drive on that side, and also braking via the mechanical break band. It seems that the engine loads prior to the clutch dissengagement, so its sounds as though the brake is simply coming on too soon? Or is the clutch dissengaging too late?

The brake is coming on before the clutches are released for whatever reason, I'm sure there probably is a spec. on the amount of travel the pedal should do before the brake band locks but I dont know what it is, I usually figure it out just by running the machine, you could try loosening the band on that side considerably and see if your problem still exists.

As I recall there is a cylinder in the brake compartment and a hose. You will have to check steering pressure on that clutch. I don't recall where the pressure tap is.

The problem can be a broken or frozen linkage, problem in the steering valve, bad hose or bad steering cylinder. The hose and steering cylinder are in the compartment and you will have a little bit of a job getting to them.

Good Luck!
