You might even want to consider a self power grader like the speed patrol based on the Allis farm tractor or a Model D. I have a Model D grader that I found in Saskatchewan and had it shipped out to BC. I know that there are a couple more in the prairies. With a machine like that you can do your own driveway and your neighbours as well (for a price).

What do these D style graders look like. Do you have a picture? and how much would one cost.

My son lives in Paynton Sask. so we will be out there this summer, I could look into one then.

Graders in reply to Dan Heffernan, 03-16-2005 15:03:49
Dan: I found two of them last fall when I was at a hunting camp in Rogers City, Mi. I took pictures and can e-mail them to you as I, too, cannot post them on this website. One was for sale for $l000. It had the rake and pinion on the front for horse or tractor. On the same road out I saw another one that was for sale for $500.

Yes I would like to see the pictures. I am up in Canada but if they were still there and could wait until I can get one that might work out.

That looks like a big one. Any idea how long or what size blade? Doesn"t appear that the rear axle offsets, which would be a problem for me.

Something mine doesn"t have is that top handwheel with the shaft going forward. What is it connected to? When I got mine it had Jeep rims welded to the spokes. Hadn"t been used in 20 yrs at least. Couldn"t find anybody to remount the rims as it wouldn"t go on a tire changer. Now it rides on Dodge rims with Michelins. Steel spokes were just about gone.

Last time I was at the steel recycling place here they had a monster. Was about 30" long with a 14" blade. Had differentials in all of the adjusting shafts. I"d have loved to see the team that could pull it. Way too large for either my driveway or my small tractor.

For everybody who hasn"t had the opportunity of using one, they work fantastic. I don"t think the pictured one could, but mine does a great job of cutting ditches.

Hey, I got some more info on the grader. It's a Russel Big Standard, I'm pretty sure the blade isn't even 10 feet wide. My guess is 9 feet. The rear axle offsets to the side as does the blade. The tongue also offsets by turning the handwheel n the top. Runs a chain from side to side and pulls the tongue to one side or other. :>)

Tongue offset? Wow. That's a real piece of machinery! Blade offset is pretty much required, never seen one that didn't. Rear axle offset is very handy. I didn't see any mechanism for that in your picture, but if the tongue offsets, the rear axle's gotta also. Must work a little different from my Galion.

When I was shopping for one I was pretty sure I could find one for the same price as a decent 3 pt blade. I did, and what a major improvement!

There's another handwheel below the picture mounted on the frame at the axle that turns a gear on a rack that moves the rear axle. I didn't think to check on how the offset compares to the front/rear slide movement there.

I thought the slot around the rear axle is where it adjusted. Slides back and forth. I'm just guessing but it seems that the blade is 10 or 12 feet. Here's another shot of the drivers seat.

Hi Loren,

Thanks, but still can't see what that top handwheel does.

That rear axle will steer, with the lever on the rh side, but not offset. Mine also steers, but has a worm gear that offsets the whole axle almost 2' either way. The effect is to extend the blade that far on either side for ditching. Requires another crank handle (on the left on mine).

Something else mine has, that I couldn't see in your pix, is a spring shock absorber in the front. When I first got mine operational I intentionally hung it up on a good rock to see what'd happen. It bounced! Didn't break.

Great machinery. Does keep the operator kinda busy.

I don't have any pics but there's another, smaller one just down the street from me. I have no idea if it's for sale as it's just been sitting there quite a while.
