I have a nice new Komatsu sitting in my yard but I can't use it this weekend because the back-up alarm is SO loud. I don't want to bother the whole neighborhood on a holiday weekend. Any ideas on shutting it off?? Thanks!

The easiest way is to disconnect it if you can do it in a accessible spot not making it too difficult to reconnect. I(having run heavy equip. for close to 20 years) have also rolled up paper towels and stuffed them in the alarm to dampen the noise-works great and is also quick to remove if needed. The only other option is not to put the machine in reverse.

I have to agree with the others, either knock the dam- thing off or simply unhook a wire. I know the alarms are loud, but don't you think the sound of the machine itself is gonna disturb them just as much as the alarm would? In my experience the sound of a diesel has a pretty good carry range too....As for the safety issue of unhooking it, that idea has been discussed on here many times in the past and everybody has their own opinions about things as you can well imagine. As for me I work around equipment all the time and I never rely on a backup alarm to tell me a machine is moving....just like crossing the road, do you wait for a car to blow the horn to let you know it's coming...no, you look before you move. Same goes for equipment. If a man is stupid enough to get himself in a dangerous position, the alarm isn't gonna make him smart enough to move..... ..And as far as I'm concrened, anybody that stupid ought to be put out of their misery before they do something else stupid and hurt one of us with the sense to know what's going on.....sure it's a shame he's dead, but then it would be even worse if it was me dead because of his dumb as-. Just my controversial .02

The only time those horn things make sense is on a big job with a lot of trades working in the same spot. But even then you get so you don't pay any attention to them. You've got your job and the foreman to worry about too. I hate the damn things, you get used to the engine but the horns carry for miles. A buddy hooked up a push switch on the dash of his wheeler, and when the OSHA twinks were lurking he just tapped the switch when he backed up.

Unhook it if you want to,but bear in mind if some one is hurt on it or around it and it is unhooked you are liable. Also a nosey osha inspector,or safety inspector will lighten up your bank account about $5000+(1st offence) for running it unhooked if you are on a job with people working around while you are running it.

Hi, CTinCT. Take one long, very heavy crowbar and give that little sucker one very hard jab right in its favourite squawkbox. That'll stop it.

However, if you seriously want it to work again someday ( Why you might want that baffles me - noisy mongrels of things.), just do as the previous poster suggested and take a wire off.

Or sleep in more on Sundays.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day.
Best wishes. Deas Plant.
