Does anyone know how to un-stick a stuck main clutch on a JD 440C. I also have one track that doesn't do anyghing. I suspect that the clutch is bad or needs adjusting on that side. I have been able to control the thing by putting the reverser in the half way position. Help.

A follow up to my earlier comment on my clutch sticking. I have the cat engine back together and the clutch is working fine after removing it and cleaning the flywheel and pressure plate. I also intstalled a new throw-out bearing while I had it apart.

I have the same problem with my 440 crawler, so I removed the engine and took the pressure plate off and the clutch came with it. I was able to free the clutch from the pressure plate and cleaned everything then reinstalled it. Was told by the clutch place in town not to resurface the flywheel or pressure plate unless I was replacing the clutch (which he said is like new). I haven't tried it out yet because I am waiting to get some of the engine parts back from the machine shop.
Before I removed the engine I tried to free the clutch by operating the cat under load with the clutch pedal pushed in (no luck). Good luck. This machine was sitting in a shed for many years.

Work it as hard as you can with the main clutch tied down, preferrably with trees or something that will give you a good jolt. While you are at it, do the stuck steering clutch the same way, keeping it pulled back (but short of the brake). I have had to do this several times on my 40C, and it eventually comes loose. Then tie the clutches back and the main clutch down when you put it up for a long time.
