I got a 743 diesel bobcat last week from a man that was mad at it and gave me a good price he said that it started runing bad 3 weeks ago so he parked and it will not crank.I have worked and rebuilt all kinds of gas engines but no diesels,it sounded like it was not getting fuel so I replaced all fuel lines even inside the tank and now it tries to hit some but not enough to run.I got a 59.00 manual from dealer and it the sorryest manual I have ever seen enerything I want to know it says take to your bobcat dealer. Also it has 2600 hrs and rad.&head replaced last year, does anyone has any ideas on this ??? thanks

If you have bled the system through and you are sure that there is no air, check that the shutoff/run solenoid is working, keep your hand on it while switching on and you will feel the plunger jump, open the injector pipes at the injectors and spin the engine over on full throttle, there should be fuel spurting out of each union, watch to see if there are any air bubbles,if you have bubbles on one tighten up the others and see if it will start,if it does then tighten up the other one and if it stops you will know that you have a sticking nozzle on that injector and compression from the engine is leaking back into the fuel system, you will need to have the injector checked.to test the glow plugs in situ you remove the wire from the bus bar on the plugs, connect an ammeter between the wire and the terminal you took it from put the key in heat position and check the reading, each plug will draw about 5 amps so 20 amps for a 4 cyl engine,if you do not have an ammeter take off the bus bar and put a hot wire to each plug if it is good you will have a spark,if it is burnt out no spark.

Kubota's are very sensitive to air in the fuel system, this could be a reason it's trying to start but wont, also if it's still cold where you are these little engines really need the glow plugs working, the most neglected piece on these things is the air filters, there's another possibility. Thats not excessive hours it has showing if the hour meter works. I would put the machine up on jackstands so the tires are off the floor (most likely it'll try to take off on you if it does crank) then get a remote starter switch so you can do everything from the back, then sparingly use a little ether and see if it will run, then come on back with what you found out.

I put new air, oil, fuel filters on it and have primed it,it is smoking real good when its turning over and hits almost every time but still will not take off,I have voltage at the glowplugs but dont know if they are working.Talked to the man that had it today and he said he stoped it because it started smoking, loading up,like it was flooding is there a easy way to check glowplugs?

AJK gave you the trick on glowplugs, however since it was running at the time it started smoking the glowplugs wont have anything to do with that. You may want to do a compression test to see what your dealing with and to see if it is worth pursuing further. Then an injector pop test would be in order. Thing about these engines Kubota does not build them anymore, you can still buy repair parts but not the complete engine, thay do have a slightly larger engine and a adapter kit to replace the 1702 you have now but it is quite expensive probably more than you paid for the Bobcat, those 743's were tough as nails tho.
