I am looking to buy a small roadgrader. I am thinking that I need a 8-10 foot moldboard and preferably a diesel engine. I would like to have hydraulic blade controls over gear driven but will take a gear driven. What brand should I be looking at? Cat, Allis Chalimers, Gallion, Lee Boy, others???
I am not too familiar with small maintainers. I am more familiar with cat 12,112, 120s etc. I am on a limited budget and would like to spend less than $7500. Thanks Jake

I've no personal experience with them, but many of the small contractors use a Huber; kind of a cross between a grader and conventional tractor..... .

Hi, Jaker. Both Galion and Allis Chalmers made full hydraulic controlled graders in the 8-ton range with tandem drives and 10-foot blades. They were the AC model D (gas-powered) or DD (diesel) and the Galion 503 which mostly had a small International diesel in them. Both were quite good little graders if the operators remembered that they were 8-ton machines, not 12 or 14-ton machines.

Allis Chalmers/Fiat Allis superseded the DD when they brought out the Fiat Allis 65 whihc was alos not a bad little grader.

The Cat 212 mentioned in an earlier post is also a very good little machine although a touch than either the Allis Chalmers D/DD or the Galion 503.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day.
Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Deas I agrre with you on the Model D AC. My brother and I restored one to use in his business before he retired. They are a fine grader we put down 22,000 tons of limestone on one pad with it and notelling how many roads ditches, parking lots and all we did with it. Easy to work on too. Here they can be gotten for 3000 dollars to 5000. His sold for 10000 as it condition was in near mint. His didn have the hydraulic blade angl but it had a neat spring loaded pin linkage that you just cornered the blade down pulled the pin with a rope and pulled forward or backed up. Most of the time we left it in one setting.

I have 2 of them right now an Allis WC speed patrol but to use it you need 8 arms. I also have a galion 303 which at this time I'm working on getting up and running. If you watch and don't mind doing some work to them you can find them for around $1000-5000

Old,
Is the allis one of those wd or wd-45 conglomerations? or is it one of the newer graders What about the gallion 303 what does it look like? Is is diesel? Hydraulic? Like I said I am pretty green to the small graders. DO you happen to have a pic of the gallion? Thanks for the help, Jake

The allis speed patrol is a WC that allis put a longer front end on and also put the blade under the belly. The Galion 303 is a gas unit, all hyd. Has 6 wheels, uses an IH engine much like one from a 660 or 560 tractor and has an Oliver tranny. At this time I don't have any pictures of the Galion, I probably will after I get it fixed up. I traded a tractor for it and probably got the bad end of the deal but I wanted it so.

Don't overlook the Cat 212. These are in the 40's to 50's vintage, have pony motors, are gear drive blade controls, but can be had quite cheap and ain't half bad to work on either. I like'em, but that's just one opinion. Good luck.
