HD4

Now that I have my backhoe, first order of buisness after logging the pond site, is to dig the pond.

I picked up a early 80's Ford 9000 tandem axle dump truck for $1000.00 to help out with this task. It's not road worthing, but the CAT engine runs well, etc...

However, I feel I need a dozer as well...

I have a line on a early 1970's HD4, guy wants $4500 for it.

He still runs the unit on blacktop jobs, but told me it needs brakes on the left side.

What does he mean, steering brakes? How $$$$ is that to fix?

I did look at the dozer 2 times, and the undercarriage looked ok. I read that undercarriage inspection guide someone gave me a while back, and went and looked at it again. I don't see any excessive wear, but I did not measure anything, and of course the UC is all muddy...

If I could get the HD4 for $3500 - $4000, you guys think that is a decent deal?

I'd hope to use it as is this summer, then worry about repairs later on, or not even bother with repairs...

Thanks for your opinions!

Of course I haven't seen the crawler, but it sounds like a good deal to me if it has the 6-way blade on it. I was looking for a couple of years for a good buy on a smaller dozer with 6-way blade, hydraulic reverser, and foot clutch. I wanted something in the 4-5 ton range. Looked at a lot of Deere 350s and 450s, but they were usually priced out of sight - or beat so bad they weren't worth trying to fix. So, I found a beat up HD4 with 6-way blade. Had new steering clutches and brakes, but the bottom rollers are shot, and the engine smoked like a chimney and needed half a can of ether to start it on a hot summer day. I paid $3600 for it. I spent $800 rebuilding the engine and $200 on a set of good used oil-filled Berco bottom rollers. I love the machine. It will easily outpush a Deere 350 and is a little less machine than a Deere 450. HD4 or the later 650 weighs around 10,500 lbs. with the 6-way blade, and the 200 cube engine is rated at 59 horsepower. You can change the steering clutches and/or brakes from the top - no need to pull the finals like the Deere 350s.
