Ammeter reading

Must have made a goof in posting last night. Try again.
On an OC46 ammeter needle was dead center when engine was running. Friend who thot he knew what to do dinked with regulator contacts; reading then went to -20 discharge.
Another friend said forget ammeter, put a voltage meter in the line but prefer to stay with the ammeter if it will read correctly. Using a 12 V battery for quick starting, regular generator and a 6 V regulator. Something must not be working right. Any help? Thanks Polk Crawler

Actually it IS working right. You just can't get a 12 (or 14) volt charge out of a 6 volt VR, as Jdemaris said. You have a system cobbled with apples and oranges and it won't produce, but the ammeter is right on, showing discharge as it should.

Go to an auto junk yard and get a one wire 12V alternator and put it on instead of the 6V generator,you will only need one wire up to the ammeter + side, make sure that the battery is connected negitive ground

What model of car and/or truck are you finding one wire alternators on in the junkyard? I've installed the aftermarket one-wire internal regulators into the Delco 10SIs and 12SIs, but never seen it as an OEM part. Standard regulator on them requires a 2 or 3 three wire hookup.

I'm not looking for one - I don't particularly like the one-wire regulators. They take too much RPM to excite. The alternator you mention on Ebay is not a Delco - it's an Indian made mock-up of a 10SI. For $50, it may be fine - don't know if you'd ever be able to get repair parts for it though - unless it is an exact clone. So, back to my original question - where do you find automobiles, e.g. in junkyards, that have one-wire Delco 10SI alternators in them? I've never seen one in an OEM application.

I'm not sure if I fully understand your post - but - current flows from a high point to a lower point. Your system can not work if you have a 12 volt battery hooked to a 6 volt generator and regulator. At best, that generator might put out 9 volts, and 9 volts is not going to run "uphill" into a 12.5 volt battery. If keeping the generator and regulator, you need to install a 6 volt battery, polarize the generator, and they try out the system. If wanted, in most cases, it can be made to work with an 8 volt battery since the generator can slightly exceed that voltage. I put 12 volt batteries in several of my tractors for winter use inlcuding my OC3 and HG- but unhook the lights and charging systems. Spring comes, the 6 volt batteries go back in and all else gets hooked up again.

I would leave the Ammeter in there, it's part of the circuit and power runs through it. Since you got a 20 Amp Discharge it is not burned out. If the engine was not running and the cutout relay was closed it would discharge like that and polerize your generator at the same time. If you have a volt meter check for voltage at the gen wire on the regulator with the engine running. Take the field wire off of the generator and jump the field terminal to ground. See what happens to the Gen Voltage. It should go up.
