MY TD-18A LEAKS GEAR OIL FROM THE LEFT FINAL DRIVE TO WHERE I CAN PUT IN 1 OR 2 QUARTS AFTER ABOUT 10 HRS OF WORK. A FRIEND ASKED WHY NOT JUST PUT IN USED MOTOR OIL IF IT IS GOING TO LEAK OUT AFTER A WHILE. MY QUESTION IS WOULD THIS WORK AND STILL LUBRICATE THE GEARS? THE FINAL DRIVE MAKES NO NOISE AND THE MACHINE PUSHES MOUNTAINS WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. I'VE HEARD ALL THE COMMENTS ABOUT GETTING READY TO REPLACE YOUR FINAL DRIVES, BUT I THINK THE SEAL HAD JUST GOTTEN ATE UP BY WIRE OR SOMETHING. ANOTHER SUGGESTION WAS TO PUT PEPPER IN TO TRY AND STOP THE LEAK. ANY COMMENTS?

LAYNESC,
I vote for the seal change. Do NOT put used motor oil in a spur or planetary gear case. The gear teeth will wear out very quickly. You will end up doing many hundred$ of dollar$ of damage. If the seal is leaking now, it could fail completely at any time. If you run it dry, you will ruin it for sure. You may cause enough damage to make the machine not economical to repair. RAB and MSM are correct. Repair it now, or be without later. Remember, if the oil can get out, water and dirt can get in.

Good Luck

Britt

Stick with the 90 weight. Also if oil is getting out dirt and water are getting in. It would pay to replace the seal.

Replace the seal - it will only get worse if you know it was damaged!
Use the proper grade oil for top up and don"t forget to keep it topped up. It will probably leak oil until there is no longer any lube and then quite quickly wear the whole drive to the point of an expensive failure.
One question, though, - is the final drive vented? If there is nowhere for pressure, due to heating, to be dissipated oil may be forced through the seal.
Regards, RAB
