Old hydraulic fluid

I've recently gotten a Ford 5500 which had sat idle for about 8 years. The engine now runs and I'm starting on the hydraulics. I decided to drain all the fluid and start with new, figuring that there was probably water and sludge in it.

Sure enough, there was some water from condensation and about 1/4" of slime on the bottom of each tank. I've cleaned it out and put in new fluid but now I'm wondering what I'm going to do with 25 gallons of old hydraulic fluid.

What would you guys do? Is it usable if it's seperated and filtered?

Most auto parts places take it. Around here we have Auto Zone, Auto Advantage, etc. They have a recycle tank in back. Call and ask.

What is it that makes hydraulic fluid "old" and no longer worthy of being used? Is it good old dirt or a breakdown in the structure/viscosity of the oil itself? When should you change it? What kind of care and feeding will prolong its life?

Only 25 gallons :-). For years I used it in a waste oil burner to heat my shop in the winter time. Burn about 400 gallons a year. Of late, my supply of waste oil has exceeded my need for winter heat. Local parts house will take it by the pail put in their tank or I can drop barrels and then pick them up after the recycler comes. He gets about $.80 a gallon for it, I just appreciate him getting rid of it for me so I let him keep the money.

I use it to help with burn piles. Sure helps make a fire burn nice.
